Vintage sci-fi aesthetics that hit my sweet spot, funky retro beats, smart androgynous stylings, built around a crisp set of pipes barely smoked at the edges. Production seems overly busy at times and the homages/concepts get a little thick, but I always appreciate the complex orchestral arrangement and ambitiousness of the pop.
If you were sleeping... Suite I - Metropolis pairs that voice with a slick production. I think that's why live, Janelle falls apart a little bit, but the albums themselves are great listening. The contemporary starting point is obviously Andre in 3000 mode, but gets goth at times. Sincerely Jane, is an aberration with twinkling ice crystals dangling over giant elephant beats, melancholy social critique drawn out as a Hammer horror flick.
"The way we live. The way we die
What a tragedy. I'm so terrified.
Daydreamer, please wake up.
We can't sleep no more."
-- Janelle Monae - Sincerely Jane
