Sports is perhaps less experimental and has more straightforward blues based rock than some previous efforts - track four, Kachi Ikusai, probably being the most literal. Nodoteki Sanpunkan, the single, is that familiar Soil and Pimp-era chunky funk which really sold me on Tokyo Jihen, but I really appreciate the sci-fi anime ska mumbo jumbo that is track 10, Noriki. Sweet Spot is a 90's style slow jam in Shinanglish that recalls the Janet album b-sides and brings a strange R&B element to Tokyo Jihen table. Kiwamaru, the last song, is sleepy time 60's psychedelia with a spare classical guitar riffs and a 3/4 time signature - a little bit gondola ballad, a lot Age of Aquarius, and ending with a big electronic prog-bang familiar to listeners of Shina's solo work. The basic structure is still that cool smokey summer club with a great live band, but with some generic pop and genre odes thrown in to the set. The group aren't breaking ice, but they are still in touch and on charge. As a whole, Sports is here and there, not quite as coherent as other albums, but perhaps the confident poly-amorous borrowings are the real stuff of this album's charm.
