SZA - SOS Album

"Kill Bill", "Blind", "Gone Girl", "Special", "Shirt"

SZA channels the messy intricacies of soul crushing female subjectivity through wounded aggression,  delusional pop fantasies and chillingly urban production. CTRL was warmer, orbiting a more traditional R&B performativity, whereby the audience/love object experiences a pacifying primacy. SOS eschews such safety for a more porous and sprawling conception of the unstable self, inward degradations of grief and longing, and almost incidental confrontations with the Other. I suppose some listeners may be turned off by the rawness, but for ladies who have been through some shit, I expect this internalized narrative is ultimately super relatable stuff.
