As always, Reynolds presents an interesting premise - consider this tale a take on Rendezvous for Rama - but on a grander scale and an attempt at explaining the alien mysteries. However, the flat characterizations just can't compare to the science whenever Reynolds tosses out vanilla dialogue to explain shallow motivations.
